About Bergen Airport
In 1952, Bergen, Norway began constructing the Bergen Airport on land that it acquired from the Flesland farm in 1937. The airport project culminated in 1955 with a new 2,999 meter runway. The city upgraded the airport in 1988 with a new terminal designed by the original terminal architect, Halfdan Grieg. The airport installed a new tower in 1991.
The terminal is equipped with twelve gates that service over 5.5 million passengers each year. Bergen is the second most active airport in Norway. The highly regarded facility is one of the best airports in Europe. It hosts 16 airlines that serve 53 destinations. Passengers have access to complimentary Internet service as well as a wide selection of dining and retail shops. Located approximately 15 miles southwest of Bergen, the airport is accessible by car, bus, taxi and boat. There are approximately 3,500 parking spaces at the airport. Over half of the spaces are in a parking garage near the terminal. The remaining uncovered spaces are within walking distance of the passenger facility.
Bergen Airport’s 1955 era terminal now serves as a heliport. A fleet of helicopters ferry workers to the North Sea oil platforms and maritime pilots to their ships.
